The second stand-alone BMW M model exceeds 700 hp on the dynamometer. There is nothing!
The first plug-in hybrid of the M division was presented last year, leaving some very outstanding numbers, something that is not surprising when we talk about an SUV that claims to be the most powerful BMW to date, although it is also the heaviest. A good letter of introduction for an XM that has just undergone what could be the first test bench test since it hit the market , giving us an ideal opportunity to find out if its official figures are true or not.
As usual in the latest models of the M division, the high-performance SUV shows different numbers than the official ones, clearly lower. The IND Distribution team turned to the guys from Performance Eurowerks to see first-hand what the hybrid propulsion system of an XM is capable of, whose declared maximum power is 653 horsepower, with a maximum torque of 800 Nm, being capable of reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.3 seconds .
After carrying out a total of four tests on the dynamometer, the best record of the German colossus was 623 horsepower and 771 Nm of maximum torque, numbers obtained, of course, on the wheels.
To check if these figures are true, they must be transferred to the engine, which implies assuming losses of approximately 20% due to the different mechanical components that come into play, such as differentials and transmission shafts. So, we have that the BMW XM is capable of producing nothing less than 778 CV and 963 Nm! Not bad at all for being the “decaffeinated” version of this model.

The team notes that the hybrid system’s battery was not fully charged, which may have affected the data returned. They also had doubts about whether the electric motor gave its best during the attempts made on the dyno or not. That is, it is possible that this beast still throws even more outstanding figures. Let’s remember that its powertrain is made up of a 4.4-liter biturbo V8 –develops (officially) 489 hp and 650 Nm– and a 145 kW electric motor , along with a 29.5 kWh capacity battery that gives the XM autonomy close to 90 kilometers.
Recall that the second independent BMW M model (the first was the M1) boasts an even more performance version called Label Red , which increases the power of the aforementioned V8 to obtain a total of 748 CV and 1,000 Nm . What will happen when it goes through the dynamometer?
